Largo Division 2
Champions
Largo
Cricket Club 1st XI finished the 2008 league season as East of
Scotland Cricket League Division 2 champions on Saturday unfortunately without
a ball being bowled as conditions at local rivals
Falkland
proved too wet for any cricket to be played. The whole of August had
been a complete washout for the East Drive men with only last Sunday’s match
versus closest challengers Boroughmuir going ahead which ended up being the
Fifers worst result of the season as they were bowled out for a paltry 65
chasing the Edinburgh sides 185. however, Largo have had a substantial lead at
the top of the division for some weeks now and that result didn’t matter in
the grand scheme of things as they have held on to take their first league
title. The 1st XI have moved up through the divisions since
the restructure in season 2000 but have always been promoted as runners up and
after spending 5 seasons in division 2 it has proved to be all the sweeter
taking the title after having been so close to promotion to the top division,
two seasons ago only to be pipped on the final day of the season.
Largo
captain Alastair Duncan took a moment from the celebrations and gave these
words “This is a huge moment for the club, especially in our 25th
anniversary, the club has moved on leaps and bounds from our humble beginnings
back in 1983 and to finally be playing in the top league in the East of
Scotland next season is going to be fantastic. We won the Scottish Small
Clubs Cup a few years ago which was brilliant but that was only 4 games, this
has been a long hard slog over a whole season and to come to the end of it
with a league title is just amazing, it’s also good knowing that along with
East Fife F.C. Largo Cricket Club has brought some more sporting success to
the area this year which can only be a good thing!”
Largo 1st XI finished the season having played 13 games, winning 10
and losing just the 3 which included a 4 game unbeaten run at the start of the
campaign which meant the other teams in the division were always going to be
playing catch up. Largo 1st XI used a squad of fourteen players
this year and everyone of them played their part in the success and with it
being a young squad it is hoped that the winning formula will continue and
that sometime in the not too distant future Largo will be playing in the
National Leagues of Scotland along side the more well known Fife cricket teams
Freuchie, Falkland and Dunfermline.
The
Largo team will be officially presented with the league trophy at the East of
Scotland Cricket Association dinner in October in
Edinburgh
.
