Record Breaking Day at Largo

Largos recent good run continued with a convincing win over Leith Beige at Largo. In a game sponsored by Allan Moncrieff Alarms, Lundin Links.  The home side won the toss and decided to bat first on a wicket that was rip for batting and an outfield ready to assist any well hit shot. The bowling was wayward and the homeside opening batsmen where in the mood for scoring heavily. The first 10 overs yielded 50 runs as Walker in particular seemed to find his run making touch.  The scoring rate increased as the Leith bowlers wilted in the hottest day of the year and Walker reached his first 50 of the season. After 20 overs the score was 117 and a total of over 300 was certainly on the cards. The 150 partnership was reached but sadly for the Largo faithful Sharif fell in the next over just a couple short of a well deserved 50. “Run Machine” Robinson was strangely subdued as he pushed the ball about and played a fine supporting role to Walker who reached 3 figures in the 27th over. Robinson found his feet and restored the run rate to the previous tempo and helped to post 158 for the 30th over. Robinson and Mowat went in quick succession which left Cook to partner the centurion. Walker finally fell for 145 and was soon joined in the pavilion by Simpson who got the only ball to miss behave all day. It was left to Cook to insure the innings was completed on a high and Largo posted a daunting 270 from their 50 overs.

Leith were almost immediately in trouble when they lost their first wicket with the 13th ball of the innings, unlucky for the capital side! They soon fell behind in the mammoth run chase and the game turned into a personal quest for Bob Mowat as he needed 4 wickets to reach 500 for Largo. He bowled solidly for 15 overs, up the hill, in the blinding heat but his patience and stamina were finally rewarded when he clamed the 4 he needed and became the first member of the exclusive “500” club. Largo fell a bit flat in the field as Leith played the overs out and with the big hitting Bilson adding 66 to the score, Leith were finally out in the last over for 198. Sharif also weighed in with four overs and Ryan Wilson and Guy Robinson were, as ever, excellent in the field.

Next week Largo travel to Edinburgh to face SRMH, a team they traditionally have close encounters with.
