Largo nailed by the Cross
Largo were comprehensively beaten by Holy Cross by 130runs at East Drive on Saturday.
With the match ball sponsored by Burnmill Joinery, Leven, the home side won the toss and asked the visitors to bat. A couple of early breakthroughs saw the high flying team 19 for 3 but sensible batting saw a 99 run partnership before the 3rd wicket fell. The benefactor of some ordinary bowling, Doug Russell, continued on his merry way and passed 50 without too much drama. He was able supported by a number of Holy Cross batsmen and he eventually fell for a fine 109. Tail end flurries enabled the Edinburgh side to post 222 from their allotted 50 overs. No Largo bowler shined but they all stuck to the task and the wickets were shared evenly about.
Largo needed an unlikely 223 for victory and the task became more difficult when the first wicket fell for 19. This started a trend as batsmen got in and seemed to be settled but promptly got themselves out again with a combination of bad shots, bad technique or good bowling form the opposition. The tail showed some fighting spirit and the innings was complete with the total on 92. Best bowling came from Shanon Bonfield, arguably the leagues best bowler.
Next week Largo faces the trip to Penicuik with a win vital to stop the run of recent poor results.
