Largos poor start to the season.
Largo 1st got off to their customary start in the league
campaign with a thumping 6 wicket defeat at home at the hands of Haddington.
In a game sponsored by Thornbridge Sawmills, Largo lost the
toss and were asked to bat first on a wicket affected by heavy rain on the
previous day. Key opener Walker was back in the pavilion for zero when he played
on to the youngster Hiley. Captain Mowat and new boy Ash repaired the damage
until Mowat departed in exactly the same fashion as Walker. He had added 21 and
the score had moved on to 30. No batsman could settle which was more to do with
the wicket rather the bowling of the Haddington players and a succession of
Largo players came and went before Simpson was joined in the middle by Smith
with the total at 63 for 6 in the 22nd over. These two players
attempted a Largo fightback and played a sensible partnership before Simpson was
caught on the boundary for an excellent 73 ball 37. Smith soon followed for 30
with the score taken on to 128. Largo were all out for 129 when last man Deemy Ali was
out without scoring. J. Knowell was
the pick of the Haddington bowlers with 4 for 37.
Haddington batsman Talbot was a man on a mission as he set
about the Largo bowlers and bludgeoned 36 before he was caught by Ash off the
bowling of Ritchie. Veteran Hiley played the archetypal anchor role as he stayed
in the middle and waited for the all too frequent bad ball which he put to the
boundary. Haddington were never in any danger of not winning the game and even
after loosing Hiley for a fine 50 and a couple of other top order batsman, Gray
and Petrie saw them home for the victory.
Only Mowat for his outstanding 15 overs for 22 runs and Simpson for his timely knock and peerless display behind the stumps gained pass marks in this game. Largo can seek comfort from the fact they underperfomed on the day rather than beaten by a better side.
