Largo lose out in narrow defeat.
Largo lost out on Saturday at home to top of the table Boroughmuir. In a game sponsored by Lundin Links Pharmacy, The capital side won the toss and asked Largo to bat. Sharif and new opener Guy Robinson made a steady start against hostile pace attack of the Edinburgh side. Both players were not intimidated by the bowling with Robinson in particular playing some fine strokes to the boundary. Disaster struck in the 11th over when Robinson misjudged a ball that nicked back of the seam and was bowled for 16. The score was on 38. Donaldson came and when and it was left to the dependable Kinnear to partner Sharif in building a defendable total. The Boroughmuir skipper was not afraid to change his bowlers and it was the introduction of Raju that put the brakes on the Largo total. Sharif was next to go as he tried to hit out and was stumped of the bowling of Raju for an excellent 41. The middle order all contributed runs without anybody really making a significant impact with Kinnear bowled for 19, Ash caught at 2nd slip for 18 and Ryan Wilson, making his first start for the ones, adding 13. When Simpson was dismissed for 1 the Largo total was shaking at 126 for 6 but Captain Mowat and Asman Ali, who clearly relishes the dogfight at the end of the innings, harried and scurried the Largo figure up to 172 until Asman was out for 10. Mowat added another couple of runs to the total taking it to 174 for 8 with his tally an undefeated 24.
Boroughmuir started slowly as Sharif and Barclay tied the openers down, however the first wicket fell once the Sharif had bowled his first spell and Smith claimed the first wicket with his first delivery. He repeated the feat in his second over thanks to an outstanding running catch on the boundary by Kinnear. The League leaders score were on 26 for 2. Vasu joined the veteran Anton and these two started to move the run chase along. Vasu showed why he is being touted by National League sides as he showed plenty class with the bat and threatened to win the game single-handed. The reintroduction of Barclay changed the fortunes of Largo as he snapped up the wicket of Vasu for a quick fire 61, Buchan for a duck thanks to a sensational one handed catch from Andy Donaldson and Hutchison for 4. The score was 126 for 6 and Largo sensed a shock could be on the cards but some explosive batting from Sumanth raced the Boroughmuir reply to the total needed and the 25 points when back over the bridge to Edinburgh.
Largo can take heart from the overall performance, especially in the field, and will be looking to take this teamwork into the next two games if they are to salvage anything from this league campaign. Special mention must go to 13 year old substitute fielder Nadeem Ali who was magnificent in the field when he was asked to fill in late on in the game. Well done Deemy!!
