Hostile Rodden Blows Away League Record
Largo returned to league winning ways on Saturday at East Drive with a
comprehensive victory over Stirling County 2. With match sponsorship from The
Paper Box Lundin Links, Largo lost the toss and were inevitably put into bat on
a surface still affected by the weeks rain. Two quick wickets were lost as Mowat
and Kinnear perished with only 25 on the board. Simpson joined Walker and they
set about the task of repairing the early damage. Simpson in particular was in
punishing for playing a number of powerful strokes. The partnership worth 68 was
broken when Walker was out for a well constructed 44. Rodden joined
Simpson and made a brisk 11 before being caught and bowled. This signalled a
Largo batting collapse with 5 wickets falling for only 9 runs including that of
Simpson for an excellent 44. Only Nick Robinson with a useful 10 and the
returning Alastair Duncan with one huge six in a innings of 16 produced any sort
of form as Largo subsided to 139 all out, a total that was considered well short
of what was required.
A large crowd had taken their seats at East Drive again to provide much
appreciated support for the home side. They were treated to a virtuoso bowling
display from Gregg Rodden which was absolutely sensational. After a quiet start
Rodden had McGowan bowled with a great off-cutter then 3 balls later the
Talented Anderson was caught at short leg by a brilliant one handed Asman Ali
catch. From that moment onwards Stirling had no answer to Rodden's pace and
accuracy. Aided by once again an excellent fielding display by his teamates,
including a quite breathtaking catch by Nick Robinson which overshadowed the
earlier brilliance of Ali, Rodden ripped through the visitors batting line up.
Stuart Ritchie chipped in with two late wickets which denied "kiwi"
the chance of all 10 but he was able with the match winning wicket to rewrite
the Largo league record books with an analysis of 12.4 overs 4 maidens 8 wickets
for 12 runs, being the best ever performance by a Largo bowler. His performance
enabled Largo to romp home winners by 77 runs.
Next week is a big week for Largo, firstly they entertain SMRH2 on league
business on Saturday then travel to either Renfrew or Queens Park to play the
Quarter final of the Small Clubs Cup. Hopes are high that there will be
cause for celebration this time next week.
