Largo's Continued Success in the Cup
Largo marched triumphantly into the quarter finals of the Readers Small Clubs Cup on Sunday with an emphatic win over Inverurie at East Drive.
With match sponsorship provided by Buckler Ltd of Dundee, the visitors won the
toss and elected to bat. A steady start was made with the run rate at around 3
runs per over with opening bowlers Rodden and Barclay on the whole keeping
things tight. The first change saw captain Mowat introduced to the attack and he
bowled exceptionally well, eventually inducing a false stroke from Bishop which
was well held by Wilson much to the delight of the large crowd that had gathered
to see the match. Ritchie was introduce to the attack and bowled well from the
off, having Hadden caught behind by Simpson who was as save as ever then the
dangerous Lamb for 43 well held again by Wilson. At 100 for 3 after 33
overs Largo were well in the driving seat, however an excellent partnership of
91 in only 12 overs from Strachan and Johnson gave Inverurie a defendable total
of 191 for 3 in their allotted 45 overs.
In reply Walker and Mowat started in very positive fashion the captain in
particular playing some aggressive strokes. The opening partnership
reached 45 when Mowat was trappped lbw for 20 with the score on 47.
Donaldson joined Walker and the two continued the quick run rate with Walker
beginning to look in good form. He was out, soon after for 42, Kinnear then
joined Donaldson who was by now beginning to time the ball in imperious
fashion. Glorious strokeplay from the two followed as the home support
sensed that a victory was very much on the cards. Donaldson reached his 50 in
fine style and Kinnear provided excellent support. On 60 Donaldson holed out to
deep midwicket ending a partnership of 60. Had the visitors thought their was
respite in the new batsman they were sadly mistaken as Rodden joined
Kinnear at the crease. Again run scoring came easily to the two and ultimately
the winning total of 193 was achieved at the end of the 36th over with Kinnear
undefeated on 38 and Rodden on 26.
This was a comprehensive Largo victory achieved with lots in reserve. The East
Drive men are now in the last 8 of this national competition with the quarter
final match to be played on June 30th.
