Largo
slumped to their first league defeat of the season when they travelled to
Townhill on Saturday.
In
a game sponsored by the Pub Refurbishment Company, Largo lost the toss and were
asked to bat on a wicket which had had heavy overnight rain and would prove to
be difficult to bat on. The openers could not get started, primarily due to the
variable bounce and the score board moved very slowly with 10 runs coming of the
first 10 overs. Cook was first to go a shade unlucky as he played on to his
stumps after contributing 8. Mowat was next to the middle and after an initial
period of settling in, took the attack to the West Fife team, scoring on both
sides of the wicket freely. He was struggling to find someone to stay at the
other end with him, as Walker then Kinnear got started then got out. When Mowat
eventually went for an outstanding 59, Largo were looking good on 108 for 3,
however this was the cue for the weekly Largo batting collapse, which saw 7
wickets fall for 8 runs. Largo set the modest target of 117 for victory.
Townhill
started patiently and waited for the bad ball before trying to score runs as
they were only looking for 2 runs per over. The opening bowlers, Mowat and
Barclay bowled well but could not prevent the hard hitting Callan scoring a
quick fire 18 before he was run out. The youngster Barclay was bowling well and
claimed the first of his 4 wickets. Barclay claimed another 2 quick wickets and
the possibility of the second major escape in two weeks was on the cards.
McKenzie was joined in the middle by Murray and these two proceeded to put the
game safe for Townhill. When their wickets fell the game was all but won for the
home side and it was left to Rivers to hit a cavalier 19 to make sure the points
stayed in West Fife.
Largo
can take some positives from the game most notalbly the continued aggressive
batting of Mowat, the pace bowling of Barclay and the general high standard of
fielding from the whole team.
Next
week Largo travel to Edinburgh to face Heriots 3rds
