Largo opened their league account with the better half of the draw against newly promoted Townhill.
The ground was predictably soft, following the wet weather over the last couple of weeks, and it was testament to the abilities of the ground staff the game even went ahead . This made winning the toss vital, but the home captain Mowat carried on his run of poor form and it was the Largo openers, Walker and Cook who had first taste of the tricky batting conditions. Scoring runs in the early part of the game was painfully slow with only 23 runs coming from the first ten overs but the visitors were unable to take any of the Largo men's wickets. Walker and Cook continued to bat steadily, seeing of the opening bowlers before mounting an attack on the replacement spin attack.. Cook was first to go not before scoring a patient 36. Walker was joined at the crease by his captain, and Mowat soon found out that batting was not easy and runs were difficult to come by. These two moved the score to 139 before Mowat was caught for a fine 25. The loss of the captain unsettled the Largo middle order as 5 wickets fell for 11 runs. Eventually, order was restored as Walker began to show is full repartee of shots, and it was the Largo opener who carried his bat for a chance -less 93. Largo set the visitors 173 for victory, on a pitch that was fast drying out.
Townhill started brightly aided by some indifferent bowling form the home sides opening bowlers. The introduction of Nairne, slowed the runs per over and the wickets began to tumble as the pressure to score runs increased. When Murray was joined at the crease by Smith the West Fife side needed over 7 runs per over, but these men began to show frailties in the Largo bowling attack and started to play some positive stokes, Townhill were moving to the target at an alarming rate. When Nairne had Murray caught at gully for a robust 36, then the likelihood of the visitors causing an upset faded away, and they finished their allotted overs 20 runs short, on 152 for 7.
Largo will be able to a number of positives from the game, most notably the batting of Walker and Cook and the fine display behind the stumps by new boy Bill Simpson. Next week Largo play hosts to Heriots 3rd X1
