The Magnificent Eight and Harvey the Destroyer.....

An eight man Largo second team travelled to a full strength Murrayfield DAFS on Saturday with hope in their hearts. Skipper Chris Baddeley won the toss and chose to field and so we took to the field. Due to work on the stadium, bowling was only possible from 1 end.

Debutant Louis Baddeley opened the bowling with a maiden over. Skipper Chris bowled the 2nd over and Modi tried to hook into the strong wind and was caught by Howard Coates at square leg. A good start which was backed up by excellent fielding and bowling (Louis ending up with figures of 4 overs, 0 for 7) got even better when Harvey Saddler came on and had Verma caught By Jim Gillan. He and Ben Coates then restricted Murrayfield with fine bowling until Harvey removed Gundala and Kumer in the same over, and West in the following one, caught by Skipper Chris. Nick Baddeley came on for Harvey and picked up the wicket of Watson, caught and bowled. Simon King replaced Ben and bowled Gutterridge and had Pujara caught again by Skipper Baddeley. Harvey Saddler then returned and got the final 2 wickets, including the catch of the day by Nick Baddeley to remove Kaveripatnam. Harvey ended with figures of 7.3 overs, 6 for 18. Murrayfield DAFs were all out for 81.

Following tea, Largo started their reply, with Nick and Chris Baddeley scoring slowly and steadily until Nick Baddeley was caught off Gundala for 34 with the score on 63. Jim Gillin then scored a single before being dismissed. Chris Baddeley (23 NO) and Ben Coates (8 NO) steering us home in the 19th over.

This was an excellent example of how good tight bowling and fielding (even with a small number of fielders) can win games.
