Glenrothes (A) 8th August - Result : Won by 90 Runs

Largo's 'shadow' team, all of whom, with the exception of Jamie Black, were beginners at the start of the summer, to play against the newly formed Glenrothes under 15 team at Riverside Park. Batting first Largo made good progress despite losing the wicket of Aqaf Ahmed early on. Andrew Warrender played a captain's innings, going on to make a well earned 34 and being given good support by Basher Ahmed, Black, Tom Nash (12 not out), and Steven Warrender. In an 18 over game Largo could feel happy to have totalled 132 for 6 wickets against a commendable bowling and fielding performance from the Glenrothes team for whom Matthew and Callum Kirk and J. Howie showed promise.
The Glenrothes batsmen found it difficult to score against the Largo bowlers and were guilty of playing rash shots far too early in their innings. Only Tariq survived for more than a few overs as Glenrothes finally were dismissed for 42, the final wicket, a caught and bowled, appropriately falling to Connor Grieve, playing in his first game for the Largo side.
Fife junior cricket has certainly seen a resurgence in the last two or three years and it was good to see the Glenrothes team playing with enthusiasm and no little amount of skill in their first competitive game.

Freuchie (A) 2nd August - Result : Won by 28 Runs

Largo's under 15 team , having won one and lost one of their previous encounters with Freuchie, were keen to emerge victorious when they met again at Freuchie a week ago. They made an ominous start, however, having been asked to bat. Adam Atherton, Andrew Warrender and skipper Andrew Robertson were all dismissed cheaply by Scottish internationalist Cowan in his opening spell. Sulmaan Sharif fared little better and only a breezy innings of 13 by Zaman Shafique gave any respectability to the scoreboard. Michael Paterson, a newcomer this season to the Largo ranks, then joined Ross Brewster and this pair, showing admirable common sense and playing each ball on its merits, effected a recovery. Both were sadly run out going for suicidal runs but Paterson could feel well pleased with his innings of 15 which included a monumental six. Matthew Humphries, called up from the under 13 ranks, as so many of the senior team were unavailable, then proceeded to play a calm and effective innings of 17 not out, well partnered by Simon Johnson and enabling Largo to reach at least a competitive total of 78.
Largo knew that Cowan was the one batsman they had to dismiss early if they were to have any hope of victory and Robertson, remembering that the same player had shown some fallibility against spin in the previous game, elected to open the attack with both speed (himself) and spin in the form, of Brewster. Success was almost immediate as Brewster clean bowled Cowan and from then onwards the Freuchie batsmen were totally unable to score freely against a fired-up Largo attack. Robertson, Paterson and Shafique all took wickets and were well supported by Jamie Black, the Warrender brothers and Atherton as Freuchie struggled to a total of 50 for 4 wickets.

Freuchie (H) Tues 24th July - Result : Won by 12 Runs

In the game against Freuchie the team played with a greater sense of urgency in all aspects of the game, showing the form which has too often eluded them this summer. Despite the loss of Steven Warrender and Robbie Ealand early in the innings, momentum was never lost with Andrew Warrender (16) being given good support by Andrew Robertson (29 not out) and Sulmaan Sharif (24), enabling Largo to total 101.
The Largo team knew the main threat from the Freuchie batsmen would come from Hurndl and Cowan and although both made good contributions they never managed to dominate an inspired Largo attack. Jamie Black in particular showed his emergence as a real attacking force with some fine spin bowling which brought about the downfall of Hurndl, Ealand conceded only 7 runs off his four overs and Andrew Warrender completed a fine all-round game by taking a magnificent caught and bowled to dismiss Scottish international Cowan and then accounting for the wicket of Munro, perhaps Freuchie's last chance of victory. The final Freuchie total was 89 and showed how Largo, without three of their top players, are finding new cricketers capable of competing with the best.

Falkland (H) Mon 23rd July - Result : Lost by 6 Wickets

They encountered Falkland at East Drive, hoping to repeat their victory of a few weeks earlier. Batting first, the Largo openers found scoring difficult against a very accurate bowling attack, managing to score only 18 runs off the first 10 overs. Only three wickets were lost however and it was left to captain Andrew Robertson (18 not out) and Michael Paterson (20 not out) to try to give their team a credible total. They stayed together in a good partnership through to the end of the innings, leaving the visitors needing 72 runs for victory.
Largo's usually tight bowling for once was sadly lacking, however and Falkland got off to a good start with Gallagher refusing to give his wicket away and Sayed going on to make a match-winning 33 not out. Of the Largo bowlers only Steven Warrender (2 wickets for 3 runs), Zaman Shafique and Andrew Warrender performed to their very best with the rest of the attack bowling too short of a length and making life easy for the opposition.

Clackmannan (A) Fri 20th July - Result : Lost by 1 Run

In a splendidly contested game at Clackmannan last Friday Largo's under 15 team were defeated by the narrow margin of one run, the game only being decided off the last ball. Clackmannan chose to bat first and set off at a cracking pace with Dan Smith leading the way and producing some fine and aggressive off-drives He duly reached the retiral score of 40, only for Largo to see another home team player, Graham Oliver, hit good form after some early escapes. He too retired after making 40, including one massive six but Largo's attack showed good spirit, maintaining line and length and not allowing the remaining batsmen to dominate. The two Ahmed brothers both took wickets at critical points in the innings and Ross Brewster showed what a fine prospect he is, taking one wicket for 5 runs off 4 overs. Largo allowed their usually high standards of fielding to lapse a little in the last five overs of this 25/25 match and Clackmannan finished on a challenging 132 for 6 wickets. Shaun Byrne and Andrew Warrender opened the batting for Largo and showed good form running well between the wickets and punishing any loose deliveries. Warrender was eventually run out after being slow to respond to his partner's call, leaving Callum Donald, in his first game of the season, to take up the attack with Byrne. After a slow start the partnership prospered, taking the score to 77 before Donald tried one big hit too many and was caught. Byrne did all he could to keep the momentum going, playing some fine shots and encouraging his partners. After his dismissal for a well earned 38, contributions to the Largo total came from Andrew Robertson, Tom Francis, Sulmaan Sharif and Basher Ahmed as the team struggled to keep up with the required run rate and the final over saw them fail to grasp victory in a game which provided the very best of junior cricket

Cupar (H) Mon 9th July - Result : Won by 75 Runs

Largo's U15 team played Cupar at East Drive last week, determined to continue recent winning ways. Batting first Shaun Byrne (23 not out) and Andrew Warrender (19 not out) gave the side just the start they needed, before both were retired. Captain Andrew Robertson was then joined by Robbie Ealand and these two accelerated the scoring with good shot selection and running between the wickets. They both reached 30 not out before leaving Sulmaan Sharif and Michael Paterson to close the innings with some lusty blows. A Largo total of 125 for 5 wickets never looked in danger of being challenged as Andrew Warrender and Zaman Shafique claimed early wickets in an aggressive opening spell. As in recent games, Robertson gave all of his team the opportunity to bowl and they responded well, giving little away with Ealand (3 wickets for 2 runs), Byrne (1 for 5) and Sharif(2 for 6) sharing the wickets. Largo's all round display was highlighted by an excellent fielding performance with Shafique claiming two fine catches and the Cupar top scorer, Panetta, being run out.

Broomhall (H) Fri 29th June - Result : Won by 98 Runs

A full junior under 15 team entertained Broomhall, a rapidly emerging club who have put much work into developing their junior section in the last few years, at East Drive. Largo looked in trouble after 3 wickets had fallen for 15 runs but Byrne, batting with increasing confidence after an out-of-form period, found an able partner in Ross Brewster and these two took the score to 37 before Brewster failed to take advantage of a weak delivery and was caught on the leg side. The arrival of Sulmaan Sharif produced an immediate increase in the scoring rate as he launched some thunderous straight drives and pulls to leg. These two gave the Largo innings real credibility and were assisted by late contributions from Aqaf Ahmed and Simon Johnson, giving Largo a final total of 113. The result of the game was never in doubt once Robertson and Brewster ( both taking 2 for 1) claimed four wickets in successive balls and with only Gudgin and Ali of the later Broomhall batsmen showing the necessary application to withstand the Largo attack, the Broomhall innings closed on 15. This was another good win for Largo but sterner tests are ahead in the second part of the season and greater stability in the batting order is required if recent performances are to be continued.

Falkland (A) Thu 21st June - Result : Won by 23 Runs

Largo's under 15 team visited Falkland on Thursday, hoping to reverse the result of their earlier game when Falkland had knocked them out of the Scottish Cup, in what was generally considered to be a disappointing Largo performance. Batting first Largo made a sound start, profiting from some very wayward bowling by the opposition and with Jamie Black and Nathan Falconer ensuring there was no sudden fall of wickets. Black was eventually bowled attempting to increase the run rate and was replaced by Robbie Ealand. He and Falconer took the score along to 41 before the latter fell in a similar manner to Black but Largo continued to make steady progress until Sayed, brought into the Falkland attack, found line and length and at the same time lured the middle and lower order batsmen into a variety of rash strokes, with inevitable consequences. A promising score of 61 for 3 wickets deteriorated into 72 all out, leaving the home team with what appeared to be an easily attainable total. Largo have nevertheless found real fighting spirit over the last month and this was apparent in both their bowling and fielding as Falkland began their reply. Captain Andrew Robertson (1 wicket for 2), Ealand (2 for 7) and Basher Ahmed (2 for 0) conceded only 9 runs in the first eight overs, putting huge pressure on the home team's batsmen as they tried to accelerate the run rate. Robertson, having his best game as skipper, handled his bowlers well, bringing all of the team into the attack, showing confidence in their ability and making good field placings. Ross Brewster performed well as wicketkeeper with Steven Warrender (2 for 10), Jamie Black (1 for 9) and Aqaf Ahmed all taking wickets at critical moments. Sulmaan Sharif showed himself to be a true team player. The highlights of Largo's fielding were two fine catches by Zaman Shafique and Simon Johnson (1 for 3), whose athletic fielding cut off a number of scoring strokes by the home side's attack. Falkland were never allowed to get into a winning position despite a battling innings of 14 by Westland and were finally dismissed for 49. Bit by bit the Largo side are finding the habit of winning again and with greater concentration on batting skills can look forward to the second half of the season.

Strathearn (A) Thu 14th June - Result : Won by 5 Wickets

In temperatures more suited to playing ice hockey, Largo's Under 15 team travelled to Doocot Park, Perth last week to play Strathearn. The home team, already quarter- finalists in the Scottish Cup, batted first and began their innings as if intent on making a record score at this level of the game. A total of 34 for no wicket after 5 overs looked far from promising for the Largo boys but captain Andrew Robertson found a seam of gold when turning to newcomers Basher Ahmed and Michael Paterson who completely changed the direction of the game. Ahmed (2 wickets for 10 runs) succeeded in halting the Strathearn run charge while Paterson could do no wrong, taking 4 wickets for 9 runs in 3 overs and at the same time inducing uncertainty in the home team's ranks. This enabled both Alex Riach and Aqaf Ahmed to pick up further wickets. Largo's fielding throughout the Strathearn innings was excellent with wicketkeeper Andrew Warrender and Robbie Ealand both taking good catches and Martin Seenan taking two of Test match vintage. A run out brought the home team's innings to a close on 59, leaving Largo with a far less challenging total to chase than had been anticipated.
However, Largo's batting has shown more than a little fragility this season and the early dismissal of Sulmaan Sharif, Seenan, Robertson and Shaun Byrne saw Largo on the verge of collapse with 4 wickets down for only 6 runs! Ealand, in the first place, led a Largo rally before being bowled by a beautiful inswinger and this brought in the comparatively inexperienced Riach to partner Basher Ahmed. These two, showing admirable common sense and waiting for the bad ball, slowly steered Largo to victory with Ahmed finishing on 21 not out and completing what had been a major personal contribution to Largo's success. The team is bit by bit putting behind it the disappointment of early season defeats, showing excellent spirit, with the performance of its many newcomers proving to be a real bonus.

St Leonards (A) Tue 5th June - Result : Lost by 7 runs

Largo's under 15 team for the first time played St. Leonards last week in a welcome addition to their fixture programme. The fact that they would possibly be playing an international line-up was not lost on the Largo players when they saw the St. Leonards team sheet, containing names such as Schmidt, Zhou, Yang and Chan. Further interest was created by the presence of two of Largo's own players in the St. Leonards ranks, de Villiers and Sneddon and it was these two who opened the opposition innings, only to perish almost immediately. Robertson, bowling one of his most hostile opening spells, accounted for de Villiers and Brewster, rapidly becoming Largo's own spin doctor, bowled his partner. Dilley, the opposition skipper, put together a fine 30 not out before retiring and Yang and Zhou with some lusty blows, saw the St. Andrews team reach a respectable but definitely attainable total of 80. Largo fielded and bowled well with Sulmaan Sharif taking a fine tumbling catch and Atherton, in particular, producing an impressive two over spell while Robertson (2 for 3) and Brewster (2 for 6) proved the most successful of the Largo attack.
Similarly good bowling and fielding by the home team restricted Largo to numerous singles when they opened their account. Sharif, Robertson and Brewster all lost their wicket in frustration at not being able to increase the scoring rate and it was left to wicket-keeper Andrew Warrender and Martin Seenan to keep Largo in the run chase as the game reached its final overs. Warrender, a welcome addition to the Largo ranks this year, was finally caught for a well made 18 and Seenan was left on 10 not out as Largo failed by 7 runs to overhaul the St. Leonards score. The game was played in excellent spirit by both teams and hopefully will result in further fixtures in seasons to come.

Kinross (H) Tues 22nd May - Result : Lost by 5 wickets

After the tied match against Arbroath Largo went into the game against Kinross exhibiting a much greater sense of purpose and more obvious team spirit than of late. Old rivals Kinross always provide stiff opposition as the Largo openers Byrne and De Villiers soon found out with the usually reliable Byrne bowled for 2 and De Villiers out for 5 to an injudicious shot after looking in good touch. Eland and Robertson then had to build an innings, which they did, coping with the best Kinross could throw/bowl at them including Scottish internationalist J. Ross. Unfortunately runs were hard to come by and both perished when trying to accelerate the scoring having played sound, sensible cricket(18 & 17). The big hitters in the team faired no better with Sharif and Shafique both being run out ( 3 & 1), the dependable Black going for 0 leaving Brewster and Falconer with little time to add to the score (1 & 2). Largo finished on 56 for 7.
Largo were always going to struggle defending such a relatively small total but to their credit they made a good attempt at it. Hopes were raised with the loss of early Kinross wickets as Eland, Robertson, De Villiers and Scott strived to bring about a seemingly impossible result. However Kinross batsman J. Tree refused to be phased as partners arrived and departed and steadied the ship for his team. Despite shuffling around the attack and introducing left-armer Brewster Largo simply did not have enough runs on the board to bring about a win. A defeat but one which the team can take heart from………great team spirit, a never say die approach and no little cricketing skill.

Arbroath (H) Fri 18th May - Result : Tied Match

Following a string of narrow and somewhat unexpected defeats Largo hoped to kick-start their season with a good performance against a well regarded Arbroath side. As has happened so often this season the weather was absolutely dreadful especially when Largo were in the field….strong winds, driving rain, cold.
Fielding second Arbroath were to have better conditions even having glimmers of late evening sunshine! Largo’s bowling was reasonably tight although Scott, called into the team as a very late substitute, struggled to find his usual good line and length. While the regulars …. Eland, Robertson, de Villiers and Black had their usual haul of wickets it was good to see debutants Basher and Aqaf Ahmed bowling so well. Helped by some slack fielding, perhaps down to the conditions, Arbroath finished on 80 for 8. A run rate of 4 an over, seemed an achievable target especially with the Largo top-order showing decent form for the 3rd. Eleven.
Although not being particularly penetrative Arbroath’s bowlers kept things tight and did not allow the Largo batsmen to dominate resulting in an exciting finish to the match. With “a run a ball” situation in the last couple of overs Eland and Robertson tried to get Largo over the finishing line only for Robertson to be bowled ! This left ‘keeper Warrender having to get bat on ball to score an unlikely 3/4/6 for a win or a 2 for a tie. Despite Largo’s silent prayers, crossed-fingers etc. a 2 it was resulting in a tie. This was a fair result with both teams trying to play good cricket in conditions anything but conducive to the “summer game”.

Falkland (H) Fri 11th May - Result : Lost by 27 Runs

After last year's wonderful performance in the Scottish Cup, hopes were high that the team would prosper yet again. It was not to be. A much improved overall performance in the field saw Largo restrict Falkland to a score of 78 (despite a mid-innings hiccup when Largo again gave away far too many extras), which last year would have been easily attainable with application. Good bowling figures were recorded by Ealand, Robertson and de Villiers but even they were outshone by debutant David Scott of the under 13 team who claimed one wicket for 6 runs in four overs, two of which were maidens.
Chasing a moderate total, the home team's batters seemed hell bent on self destruction as one after another played wild and unnecessary shots resulting in the inevitable and regular fall of wickets. Only Ealand and Robertson, who were both unlucky to lose their wicket, showed the patience needed in such a situation as Largo were dismissed for a meagre 51. It has been a disappointing start to the season for the team, who at present are showing only glimpses of their true form. All three games lost so far could so easily have been won but the side contains a number of new and comparatively inexperienced faces who now have to prove themselves in the weeks to come.

Freuchie (A) Wed 9th May - Result : Lost by 2 Runs

Largo under 15s' aspirations for the summer were somewhat dented during the week after suffering defeat at the hands of Freuchie. Freuchie owed much of their total of 96 to Scottish international Cowan and his opening partner Wright who between them contributed 57 of their team's score. Largo made their own generous donation of 30 extras, the second time they have been badly let down by wayward bowling although Ealand, Robertson and Byrne bowled economically and accurately.
Cowan again proved Largo's downfall, taking the wickets of Ealand and Byrne in successive balls as the Largo innings faltered in its early stages. Robertson, a much improved batter, steadied the ship, adding 22 runs with newcomer Zaman before being bowled. Zaman, playing his first game for the club, made some lusty blows, along with a host of mishits, in scoring 33 not out and sharing in a promising partnership with Jamie Black, who continues to develop a sound defensive technique while nudging and nurdling the ball for quick singles. Falconer, briefly, and Seenan, threatened to give Largo victory but too little application early in the innings had left them with too much to do and Freuchie won through by the narrow margin of two runs.

Cupar (H) Mon 30th April - Result : Lost by 4 Wickets

A somewhat under strength Largo under 15 team, opened its season with a home game against Cupar last week. Batting first, Largo made a steady start with Jamie Black promoted to opener and given instructions to help skipper Shaun Byrne defy the opening attack. This he did admirably before being dismissed with the score on 15 and his departure brought about the fall of two quick wickets, with Robbie Ealand, one of last season's top scorers, being bowled by a lovely inswinger and James Tooze caught off his gloves. Byrne continued to bat steadily, despatching any bad ball and running well between the wickets. He was then given fine support from Andrew Robertson (19) and Sulmaan Sharif (31 not out). A final flourish saw the home team, with Byrne retiring on 30, reach a total of 125 for 6 wickets.
Largo, whose fielding and bowling were exemplary last year, perhaps fell victim to complacency as Cupar, who are enjoying a renaissance, started their innings. Only Ealand, bowling a tight line and length and the promising under 13 fledgling Scott , were able to contain the opposition openers, who benefited from a variety of loose balls, wides, no balls and generous field placings, courtesy of the Largo attack. Black, however, finally struck to dismiss opener Bedford but Cupar progressed with little difficulty to 95 for 1 wicket before the Largo bowlers found any real penetration. Scott, two wickets, Sharif and Robertson all claimed victims to give Largo a glimpse of a highly improbable victory but three dropped catches, at critical moments, saw Cupar safely home with an over to spare.
Largo will know they have to improve on this if they are to fare better against Freuchie and later in the week against Falkland in the Scottish Cup.
