Arbroath (A) Sun 27th September - Result : Won by 34 Runs

Our last game was fittingly against Arbroath and the weather was great for the time of year. Largo batted first and after a great cover drive by Alex we had an early setback when Scott Fleming was run out. Alex and Ryan then played superbly against some very good bowling. Their stand of 73 came to an end when Ryan was bowled by Mark Fleming. Ben survived a couple of overs before being bowled. Tristan then came to the crease and had s super stand of 64 with Alex before Alex reached his half century and retired. As far as I'm aware this was the first ever half century for a Largo U13 player so congratulations to Alex on this achievement. Tristan very nearly joined him but was agonisingly out for 49 when he was caught to a VERY wide delivery ! David and Matt Humphreys then had a tremendous go in the last few overs which saw us score 47 runs from the last 8 overs (20/20 style !) James Ritchie came in for 1 ball and smashed it to the boundary. A really great batting performance by all of the team. Arbroath then treated us to a fantastic tea which all of the boys enjoyed.
Their reply started briskly with Ross McLean dominating the batting, showing why he was one of the best U13 players in Scotland, and they were soon ahead of the required run rate. Ryan and James Ritchie then bowled a very tight spell and Ryan took a couple of quick wickets before the the big moment of the match came when there was a mix up and Ross Mclean was run out for 35 to leave Arbroath on 57 for 3. Arbrath then recovered and scored at a decent rate and kept up with the required rate but they lost wickets at regular intervals. Tristan bowled particularly well to take a couple of wickets and Scott Fleming and Ryan both kept wicket very well. Jon Price also bowled nicely on his U13 debut. Arbroath were eventually out for 163 (Mark Fleming - 50) and the final wicket marked the end of the season which after a great season of 18 matches was now sadly upon us - Only 7 months to go ! As a final note I should say that the Arbroath coaches mentioned how good our boys behaviour had been which I and the other coaches can only echo. Where as good cricket is important then so is they way they conduct themselves and they have done this perfectly through the season and have made lots of friends along the way and raised the profile of Largo Cricket Club for the better.

Stirling (A) Sun 9th August - Result : Won by 3 Wickets

Stirling invited us to their superb new facility at New Williamfield. They also asked us to bring 2 U15s so Andrew and Sulmaan kindly played. Alex also made his debut as a skipper which he really enjoyed. Stirling batted first and got off to a brisk start with a lot of extras but when the score had reached 31 James Ritchie produced a superb piece of fielding to run out one of their openers. David and Ryan then slowed the scoring rate down before Matt Martin bowled the other opener. Stirling never really got away and further wickets for Ryan, Matt Humphreys and James Ritchie (His debut wicket for the U13s) helped keep their final total down to 116 for 6. Stirling provided a fantastic tea for the boys which they all thoroughly enjoyed.
As with the Stirling innings the start of Largos innings was helped by a lot of byes but their opening U15 bowler soon got his eye in and took 3 quick wickets with one keeping very low to Andrew and with the run out of Matt Martin Largo were on the ropes at 20 for 4. Alex played superbly, as he has all season, but was out in the 11th over for 17. This meant that Matt Humphreys and Ryan were at the crease with the score on 39 for 6. Matt and Ryan then batted quite magnificently by playing anything straight with a sound defensive technique and wayward deliveries were punished. Their fantastic stand of 74 finally ended when Ryan was caught but this stand of the season meant Largo were nearly home and dry. Man of the Match Humphreys fittingly finished the match off with another 4 and finished on a career best 39 not out.
This longer match again helped the boys development as cricketers and we will hopefully play more longer over matches next season.

Dunfermline (A) Wed 15th August - Result : Won by 65 Runs

A young Dunfermline team asked Largo to bat first. Some fine performances with the bat followed with all Largo players scoring some runs. Alex top scored with a brisk 20 and was closely followed by David and Ryan. Aidan made his U13 debut and played some good straight drives unil he found a gap in the field and scampered his first ever run for the U13s
In reply Largo bowled very straight and only conceded 12 extras in total with just 7 wides. James R and Drew kept it very tight to start with before Scott F and Will took some wickets. David and Ryan bowled a bit of spin with the latter obviously finding spin the way to go with 4 wickets in his second over. Dunfermline were finally out for 38 but their young side had done well and had bowled particularly well.

Arbroath (H) Fri 3rd August - Result : Lost by 22 Runs

Arbroath were the vistitors for our first home game for a long time. We started at noon for a 40 over game. Arbroath batted first and got off to a solid start (30-1 after 8 overs). Scottish U13 player Ross McLean then really got going and the score raced along to 106 for 2 after 20 overs with Alex getting the prize wicket of Ross shortly before drinks. The second 20 overs saw a marked improvement in Largos bowling and fielding and they finally restricted Arbroath to 183 for 7 in their 40 overs. David, Ryan and Dom all took 2 wickets each. It really was a terrific fightback from a dangerous position and credit goes to all of them.
Alex and Dom got Largo off to a nice start with some super shots and were 31 without loss after 10 overs. Dom then missed a straight one which brought Hamish to the crease. Alex and Hamish then batted superbly taking the score to 103 for 1 after 25 overs. Alex then mistimed a ball from Ross Mclean and was caught for 35. Ross then took 2 more quick wickets and when Hamish fell shortly afterwards for a superb 44 Largo were in trouble at 120 for 5. David had a real go at anything loose and rattled off 24 super fast runs before mis-timing a pull shot to mid-wicket. Largo were finally all out for 161 in the 39th over.
Another great match for the boys where all of them will have a learnt a lot about cricket and how to play for 40 overs. many thanks to Arbraoth for coming all the way down and playing the game in the right spirit and we look forward to out next meeting with them.

Freuchie (A) Mon 30th July - Result : Won by 47 Runs

Freuchie were our hosts on a dry but quite cold evening with a fresh breeze blowing across the wicket. We batted first and lost early wickets to the pace of F Black. This left us on 17 for 3 after 4 overs. Alex and Hamish then put on a superb stand before both batsmen retired. David then came to the crease and picked off every loose ball and scored a quickfire 22. Ryan and Scoot then batted nicely over the last few overs to take the final score onto 121 for 3.
In reply David and Ryan both bowled beautifully and had Freuchie in all sorts of trouble at 4 for 2 after 4 overs. More fine bowling from Laurie and Andrew kept them pegged back and after 8 overs Freuchie had only progressed to 16 for 3. F Black then batted nicely until he reached the retiral score of 20. Some excellent fielding including 3 run outs and tight bowling kept Freuchie tied down and they finally reached 74 for 8 off their 20 overs.
The highlights of the performance were the superb batting recovery, the extremely tight bowling (Only 5 wides which must be some sort of record), the superb ground fielding and catching and the attitude and encouragement of all of the players. The whole team has really grown into a superb unit over the last few matches and the bar has been raised even higher !

Cupar (A) Tues 24th July - Result : Won by 7 Wickets

We headed off to Cupar for a 30 over match off the back of our 40 over match the previous day. Largo again fielded first and you could see how much they had learnt from the previous day. Sharp in the field and lots of encouragement from everyone. David and Ryan kept it very tight which built up the pressure. Cupar tried to run a quick single but Hamish pounced and threw down the stumps. In the next over David had S Bedford (Fife U15 player) trapped LBW and when Ryan bowled their no 3 in the next over they were 5 for 3. Ben and Scott then carried on the good work to see them at 12 for 5 after 11 overs. Alex bowled beautifully for 2 wickets and was ably supported by Pete, Andrew, Tristan and Dom who all took a wicket a-piece. Cupar reached a total of 47 with some help from a young Ben Coates.
After the early loss of David, Ryan and Scott steadied the ship by batting solidly against the opening bowlers and batted for 18 overs reaching 39 for 1 before Scott was finally out. Once the winning total was reached we batted on and almost everyone had a bat. Ryan reached the retiral score of 25 and Alex hit 9 and Andrew scored 6. Overall a great team performance in the field and some nice batting to follow. With a lot of cricket coming up in the next couple of weeks this was a super display and a new standard has been set.

Arbroath (A) Mon 23rd July - Result : Lost by 6 Runs

Arbroath kindly invited us to their super ground for a 40 over match. The weather was set fair and even though several key players were enjoying themselves on foreign shores we had a fine team on display bolstered by the Ahmed boys. Largo bowled first and all of the bowlers bowled straight all afternoon with only 23 wides/no-balls during 40 overs (Many a senior team would be happy with those stats !) The straight bowling paid dividends in the 8th over when Basher took the first wicket. A steady stream of wickets fell to leave Arbroath on 64 for 6. A very good stand of 51 then took them up to 115 before a good run out halted their progress. Arbroath finally reached 130 for 8 off their 40 overs. The Largo players can be very proud in the way they bowled and fielded and kept Arbroath down to an achievable score.
After some hastily eaten sandwiches Largo replied. Alex and Dom got Largo off to a great start. Alex had to go off after taking a nasty ball in the chest which brought Hamish to the crease. He and Dom carried on the good work and at Drinks after 20 0vers Largo were 63 for no wicket. As so often happens the drinks break did not help and Dom and Tristan were out shortly afterwards but Alex and Hamish carried on in great fashion taking the score to 92 for 2 after 25 overs. After that a steady stream of wickets fell and even with the help of debutant Ben Coates Largo could not quite reach the target and fell 6 runs short. A great afternoons cricket was had by all and hopefully all of the guys learnt a lot about bowling and batting straight for long periods and also about playing against strong opposition.

Broomhall (A) Mon 25th June - Result : Won by 8 Wickets

James won yet another toss and elected to field. Some wayward bowling to start with let Broomhall get off to a fine start but Ryan and Matthew then pegged them back with a tight spell and a wicket apiece. Some poor fielding by Largo (almost unheard of this season) then let Broomhall score far more runs than they should have been allowed to and only some tight bowling by Alex and Scott Aitken at the end kept their score down to 79 for 5.
Alex and James yet again saw off the opening bowlers and kept the scoreboard ticking above the required rate of 4 runs per over. When Alex and then James were out in consecutive overs Hamish and Tristan came to the wicket and played some superb shots to all parts of the ground and managed to reach the winning score in the 13th over. Both batsmen then retired and Broomhall agreed to finish the game thereby allowing all of Largos batsmen a brief innings which they all enjoyed and racked up 125 runs in total which was the highest score of the season to date.
Overall the bowling and fielding has been superb this season but we fell short of our high standards in this match and need to return to our best in the next few matches.

Falkland (H) Mon 18th June - Result : Won by 7 Wickets

Another glorious evening heralded the arrival of Falklands young U13 team. Largo bowled first and bowled superbly restricting Falkland to a total of 49 runs. After David had removed the dangerous Meikle Ryan, Will and Matt Humphreys all took 2 wickets and Pete Rhodes bowled well on his U13 debut.
In reply Largo lost 3 early wickets but Tristan, James and Will steadied the ship to see Largo home in the 15th over. Falkland kindly bowled out the 20 overs allowing all of Largos players to bat (Andrew managed to hit a 5 off one ball - Well Run !) and they had to face a hostile over from the dangerous Falkland debutant who looked suspicously like Largos very own KwikCricketer Aidan Brown !

Starthearn (H) Mon 11th June - Result : Lost by 1 Run

A truly glorious evening was the setting for the most exciting game of the U13 season so far. Largo were asked to bowl and they bowled extremely well to start with reducing the opposition to 27 for 5 at the end of the 7th over with Tristan taking 2 wickets. Starthearn then batted nicely to take the score to 93 before a late flurry of wickets reduced them to 96 for 8.
Largo's reply was steady and after 10 overs they were 37 for 2 which meant they required exactly a run a ball from the last 10 overs. Tristan attacked in his normal fashion before being bowled 1 short of his retiral score. Another flurry of wickets brought together the last wicket pair of Scott Aitken (9) and Ben (10) who batted superbly to get Largo within touching distance of a famous win. 2 runs were needed to win from the final ball of the match but some superb Strathearn fielding ensured it was not to be. Congratulations to Starthearn for playing the match in a super U13 spirit (Allowing everyone in their team to bat and bowl) and good luck to them for the rest of the season.

After being asked to bat first Largo put in another solid batting performance. Alex and David saw off the dangerous opening bowlers and both retired at the end of the 6th over with the score on 25. After the loss of a couple of quick wickets Ryan and Tristan pushed the score onto 67 by the end of the 12th. After Ryan retired on 20, Matthew Martin and newcomer Hamish Imrie helped push the final score onto 99.
Some superb bowling, tight fielding, great catching and inspirational captaincy were the highlights of the match though. David bowled an inspired spell to start with to remove 2 of the top 3. This great start was carried on by all of the bowlers. Matthew Martin took 2 super wickets and James Ritchie bowled his tightest spell to date. Alex took a couple of wickets late on and Hamish finished the match off in the 17th over. Both keepers (Hamish and Andrew) kept very well and there were great catches by David, Dom and Ben.

Cupar (H) Fri 1st June - Result : Lost by 45 Runs

Largo fielded first and kept it very tight for the first 8 overs when Cupar had progressed to 25 for 1. Several dropped catches in this early period were to cost Largo dear as Cupar then pushed the score along over the next 7 overs to 75 for 1. With C Walker retiring, L Wilkinson being caught eventually and James Tooze bowling very well (3 wickets) the scoring rate slowed again and Cupar finished on 92 for 6. One good feature of the bowling was only 14 extras were given away.
In reply Largos top order could not handle the pace and full pitched deliveries of C Walker who took 4 for 8 in his 4 overs which effectively won the match for Cupar. Ryan, Andrew and Will showed good defensive technique but with Tristan and Matt Humphries both being run out attempting second runs this ended any hopes of Largo progressing in this competition.

Cupar (H) Mon 28th May - Result : Won by 7 wickets

East Drive was finally graced with glorious sunshine for a junior match and this unusual weather phenomenon was much enjoyed by all players, officials and supporters! With a Scottish Cup tie soon to be played between the two teams one had to wonder if nerves might have an impact on this dress-rehearsal …..perhaps it did and explains the numbers of “extras” each team gifted the other! Laurie and Matthew M. opened the bowling and like most of the bowlers who followed them found problems in finding their “line” although Matthew did break Cupar’s opening partnership. This brought the big hitting Walker to the crease but with Alex’s tight bowling at one end and David’s unusually wayward pace at the other Walker attempted a big hit too early in his innings and was well caught by Matthew H. from a good ball from David. With Walker gone Turner batted well to retire on 20 and Panetta showed some resistance towards the end but the Largo bowlers stuck to their task with Cupar closing on 82 for 6.
Tristan, Dom and James all bowled economically and Ben, Scott F. and Scott A. continue to develop and get the match experience they need. Largo’s tried and tested openers, James and Alex, were moved down the order to give others the experience. Laurie and David welcomed the challenge and saw off Cupar’s main bowling threat before Laurie was bowled with the score on 28. When Tristan was bowled for an exciting 15 the score had moved on to 72 David having retired on 20, his highest score to date. Both Matthews contributed big “fours” to the total and Ben gained further time in the middle. When the winning total was reached at the end of the 16th over Cupar agreed to play on giving both Scotts a little match batting time.

Kinross (A) Thur 24th May - Result : Lost by 4 wickets

Largo batted first and James and Alex played very well yet again against some fine bowling from Kinross. Both reached the retiral score of 20 at about the same time. This brought Ben and Ryan to the crease who had to push the score along. When Ben was run out and Ryan retired hurt Matt, Tristan and James Ritchie making his debut helped get the score up to 91 for 2 as Kinross brought back their opening bowlers. Another very good team batting performance based on a solid opening partnership.
David looked back to his best with 3 good opening overs and Ryan kept it tight but Kinross were just above the required rate. Matt Martin bowled some super deliveries to take 2 wickets with 1 of them being a tremendous catch in the deep by debutant James Ritchie. James Ritchie bowled nicely on his U13 debut and James T and Alex both bowled well and when Alex took 2 wickets in 2 balls the match was in the balance but Kinross managed to get home in the penultimate over. A defeat maybe but these tough tight games are just the sort of games the guys need to play. Another good all round team performance (Fielding was much improved) as the U13s improve game by game.

Perthshire (H) Mon 14th May - Result : Lost by 8 Runs

Due to a late start Perthshire went into bat first on an ever increasingly gloomy Monday evening at Largo. Overs were reduced to 18 per side. The Perthshire openers batted nicely to both reach the retiral score of 20. Their departure slowed the scoring rate down and from 64-0 after 10 overs the scoring slowed as wickets fell steadily until Perthshire finally reached 100-4. James made his bowling debut for the season and looked impressive taking 1 for 1 in his 2 overs.
The Largo batting order was resorted to enable some of the players to bat who had not been given a chance in the last couple of matches. David batted nicely and Matthew showed his true potential by reaching the retiral score on 20 in double quick time with some violent blows. Andrew, Dom and the Scotts (Aitken and Fleming) did well in their first meaningful bat for Largo U13s before Ryan and Tristan came together at 54 for 2. They then batted nicely taking the score to 92 before both were out having a thrash in the last over.

Forfarshire (H) Sun 13th May - Result : Won by 25 Runs

Largo U13s lost the toss and were asked to bat on a gloomy Sunday morning at Largo. James and Alex started slowly and saw off their opening bowlers who both bowled very straight. With the score standing at 16 for 0 after 8 overs the openers put their foot on the gas at just the right time and passed the 50 mark in the 13th over. With the score on 61 Alex was unluckily run out but he had done his job. Tristan joined James and they hit some glorious shots until James had to retire at 30. Ryan joined Tristan and they both accelerated well to take the final total to 104.
Largo came out to bowl in deteriorating conditions and with David bowling very tightly from one end Ryan was able to pick up wickets that this pressure had led to and they were soon 10 for 3. A good stand followed which took the score to 51 until Andrew took a good catch off Matthews bowling. 2 more wickets went down with the score on 61 which effectively finished the match. All 10 bowlers managed to bowl again which is a tribute to a group of talented cricketers. The next match in this competition is at home to Cupar.

Freuchie (H) Mon 7th May - Result : Won by 9 Wickets

Largo U13s lost the toss and fielded first on a very windy evening at Largo and had soon removed both openers with the score on only 5. Freuchie then rallied and with 2 of their batsmen (both Fife U13 players) reaching the retiral score they put together some good stands to reach 72 for 4. Some tight bowling at the end and a wicket on his U13 debut for Dom Coates kept the final score down to 85 for 6.
Largos reply was from James and Alex who both batted beautifully to see off the new ball initially and then went on the attack. Alex was eventually out 1 short of the retiral score but by then had taken the score to 63. Ryan then helped James take the score to 84 before James reached his retiral score and Tristan came in to finish the match in the 17th Over. The final few overs were bowled to enable a few more bowlers and batsmen to gain some more time in the middle.

Cupar (A) Wed 2nd May - Result : Won by 7 Wickets

Largo U13s started their 2007 campaign with an away trip to Duffus Park, Cupar. Largo fielded first and soon had Cupar in a spot of bother at 11 for 4. All of the Largo players bowled and bowled very well at that and managed to eventually bowl out Cupar for 43 in the 19th over with Scott Aitken taking his debut wicket to finish off the innings.
In reply Largo started OK but then lost 2 quick wickets to be 8 for 2. Captain Tooze and Alex Anderson then steadied the ship to take the score to 28 for 2 before Alex was out. No further slip ups occured and James and Laurie saw Largo home in the 15th Over. Cupar very kindly agreed to bowl out their 20 overs to allow all of the Largo batsmen a brief innings which saw them take the total to 77 for 3.
