Arbroath (A) Thur 14th August - Result : Lost by 71 Runs
After some horrendous rain in the previous days we were blessed with a dry day at last for our visit to Arbroath. We had a very young side with Hughes making his U13 debut and Aidan filling in at the last minute.
Arbroath batted first and Ryan struck in his 2nd over. With some tight bowling from James aswell the openers never got away and when there was a run out in the 9th over the score was 25 for 2. Drew bowled well again and was unlucky not to take a wicket or 2. Alex "Spin-King" Anderson then came on and Andrew took a superb stumping to leave Arbroath on 43 for 3 after 14 overs. Nicky Sim and Craig Cameron then batted very well punishing anything loose and short balls in particular. The score raced on to 125 until Ryan came back and removed Craig. Ryan then also bowled Blair and wi the score on 142 for 5 tArbroath looked set for 200+. But Scott Fleming then removed Nicky when Andrew took a good catch and the same combination worked in the next over aswell. Alexx and Dom each took a wicket in the final overs, including a fantastic catch from James, and a good tight final 5 overs at the end had restricted Arbroath to 180 for 9. Andrew kept really well again
After a fantastic Arbroath tea Alex and Dom worked really hard against some superbly tight bowling and electric fielding. They managed to reach the drinks break with their wickets in tact but the score was only 48 so there was a mountain to climb if the traget was to be reached. Alex fell shortly afterwards for 27 followed a few overs later by Dom for 15. James made a bright and breezy 16 including 3 well struck boundaries. Ryan and Scoot made 17no and 8 to take the final score to 109 for 8. Hughes remained not out at the end aswell so well done to him on his debut.
The young guys did really well against a much older side and making over 100 runs and surviving for the full 40 overs were good achievements. Thanks again to Arbroath for 2 cracking matches and already looking forward to them next year.

Arbroath (H) Mon 4th August - Result : Lost by 2 Wickets
On a fine day Largo batted first and faced an initial fine spell of bowling from N Sim/C Cameron. Dom had his leg stump knocked out of the ground in the 3rd over but Alex and Hamish then batted nicely to get the innings off to a good start. Hamish was out for 21 with the score on 40 which brought Mina to the wicket. After her 50 the previous day she was looking to do the same but was caught behind when the score had reached 71. When Alex fell for a well made 28 the score was on 78 but Matt, Laurie and Ryan all scored in the teens to trake the score onto 116 for 6 with 8 overs left. Unfortunately the last 4 wickets feel quickly and the total after 36 overs was 120 all out. The missing 4 overs would prove to be vital.
James and Ryan bowled a superb first spell and with James getting N Sim out LBW and Mina running out M Fleming the score was 10 for 2 after 8 overs. Drew and Laurie then bowled another good spell with Drew taking a high catch off Lauries bowling to leave Arbroath on 37 for 3 after 16 overs. C Cameron was now at the wicket and played some cracking shots including 2 big sixes in a superb knock of 53. At the other end wickets continued to fall with Alex taking 3 for 13 in his 6 overs to leave them on 90 for 6 after 28 overs. Ryan came back on and finally took the prize wicket of C Cameron and when there was run out in the next over the score was on 106 for 8 after 32 overs. Scoot and Matt could not unfortunately take a wicket and the 2 young players (R Cameron and H Carnegie) batted superbly to take Arbroath to victory with 2 overs to spare.
All in all a superb game of cricket played in a competitive, but friendly, atmosphere and we look forward to the return trip to Lochlands. Special mention goes to Andrew Eglinton who put in his best performance behind the stumps for Largo.

Kinross (H) Tue 22nd July - Result : Won by 7 Wickets
Kinross batted first and got off to a poor start when Ryan took a wicket in the first over. A mixture of good batting and poor bowling including a lot of wides then allowed Kinross to progress to 53 before a sharp bit of fielding by Calum created a run out. Kinross, with some super batting by Grant Doig, then progressed to 84 before the old combination of Anderson/Brown brought about another wicket. Alex then took 1 more wicket to leave Kinross on 98 for 4.
Dom and Alex got off to a good start until Dom was run out with the score on 14. Hamish came to the wicket and almost as quickly returned to the pavilion BUT by reaching the retiral score of 25 in double quick time with some hard hit fours ! Matt joined Alex and they took the score to 68 in the 12th over before Alex was caught for 19 pushing for quick runs. Ryan and Matt then took the score to 98 before Ryan was bowled going for a big blow to win the match. Calum came in and smashed a 4 with his first shot to finish the match in the 15th over.
We have maintained very high standards over the previous 6/7 matches but in this match the bowling was generally poor and the ground fielding was way short of our normal standards. We had a blip in 1 game last season aswell so hopefully this was the blip this season. As always with cricket you get another chance and the batting was very good so redemption was achieved !

Alnwick (A) Wed 9th July - Result : Draw
Largo were delighted to at last play a match on their North East Tour after the first 2 matches were wiped out by the weather. Also Yorkshires pen pushers (or not as the case may be !!) managed to ruin our visit to the Riverside to see the 20-20 cup quarter final. A tour of the Riverside ground and an hour in their nets followed by some adhoc evening KwikCricket at Blanchland (The UKs most scenic village) on the Tuesday and 2 BIG matches on Almouth beach on the Wednesday afternoon managed to keep everyone playing but a match against the Sassenachs was what everyone really wanted.
The Alnwick facilities were superb and they were the most welcoming of hosts and agreed to our suggestion that they bat first. David and Ryan bowled a couple of tight overs before Ryan struck and they were 1 for 1. Ryan then bowled a couple of loose deliveries to the new batsmen which were dispatched to the boundary before Ryan got his man with James T taking another good catch which left them on 15 for 2. James R bowled a couple of tight overs aswell. 4 more tight overs followed from Will and the Pedator who each took a wicket to leave them on 50-4 at the end of the 13th over. 2 of their batsmen then played solid cricket to take them to 123 for 4 at the end of their 25 overs. Alex did a great job ensuring that all 15 players managed to bowl at least 1 over and managed to deal really well with fielders going on and off the pitch every 2 overs
In reply Dom and James R opened and saw off a super opening spell. Just as James looked like he may get going he was bowled off his pads to leave us on 18 for 1. Alex played nicely and Dom batted really well until he was retired on 16no. Ryan came in and decided to catch up with the run rate which he and Alex duly did by hitting some glorious shots and getting them up to 56 for 1 after 13 overs. But once again the cricketing rain gods had decided that we were not to finish the match.
We were then treated to a wonderful tea by the Alnwick club and we presented Alnwick with a Tour pennent and some Largo club ties and they reciprocated with a Alnwick Junior Top

Stirling (A) Wed 2nd July - Result : Won by 59 Runs
Largo batted first and got off to the worst possible start when James was bowled first ball. Drew played one great shot for 4 but was then caught behind. Mina and skipper Ryan steadied the ship. With large boundaries there was a lot of running involved with a large number of 3s. Mina retired on 26 which bought Calum to the crease. Calum proceeded to smash the ball to all parts and he and Ryan took the score onto 95 after 15 overs before they both retired on 27 and 23. Laurie and Scoot finished the innings with some fine blows by Laurie takling the score to 115 or 2.
James' first over was a mixture of wides and a wicket and after 5 overs they were 30-1. Ryan then took 2 important wickets before Hamish the destroyer came on and took 3 wickets for 3 runs in his 2 overs. Briony bowled 2 tight overs and Jon took a good catch and also his first wicket for Largo U13s. Laurie bowled a wicket maiden and Mina took 2 wickets late on to leave Stirling on 56 all out. Catching hero of the day was Scoot with 3 good takes and Scott Fleming is improving all of the behind the stumps.
Another solid performance with generally very tight bowling, some very good catching and good all round ground fielding. Bring on the Northumbrians !!

Dunfermline (H) Tue 24th June - Result : Won by 10 Wickets
Dunfermline won the toss and decided to bat first. After Alex had injured his finger Ryan took over the captaincy and his first decision was to bowl James Ritchie down the hill which seemed inspired when James took a wicket with his first ball. Our friend Jamie and David Timmins then took the score quickly onto 27 before Ryan had Jamie caught and then Hamish Stirling bowled David straight afterwards. Calum Grewar was slowed down by the damp conditions which really helped him bowl nicely and he took 3 wickets. Some really tight bowling by Will, Pete (who took his first wicket of the season), Scoot, Mina and Matt the Hat kept the score down to 39 all out. Matt took the final 2 wickets off successive balls and is on a hat-trick.
Scott Fleming and Andrew got off to a great start with Scott playing his trademark leg glance with perfect timing. Andrew played some really nice off side shots (with a dab or 2 thown in !). Scott retired on his highest ever score for Largo (23) which brought Hamish to the crease for the first time in Largo colours. He dispatched the first ball to the boundary which calmed his nerves nicely. He and Andrew (10 n.o.) then saw us through to the target with no hiccups.
The game was played in persistent light rain so many thanks to Lindsay and Dunfermline for coming over and playing.
Again our bowling (only 10 wides in wet conditions), fielding and in particular our catching were first class but we must not rest on our laurels but keep striving to improve on our current high standards.

Forfarshire (A) Mon 16th June - Result : Won by 35 Runs
This was our first visit to Forthill for a couple of seasons and the guys were looking forward to it. We batted first and our 2 experienced batsmen, Alex and Mina, were both out cheaply and we were in trouble at 12 for 2, Cometh the hour, Cometh the Lawhead men ! Scoot played his finest innings for Largo and retired on 20. He was swiftly followed by James who pipped him by reaching 21 which was his 2nd retiral score in a row. Jon also played some super shots and also retired. New kid on the block, Mikey, played his trademark shot with some aplomb and swiftly reached the retiral score which I'm sure will be the first of many. The score had now rattled on to 100 for 2 in double quick time.
As the final batsmen looked for quick runs a few wickets were lost which brought Scoot back the wicket and he managed to get a single to catch James up so no bragging rights at school the next day for James ! but the loss of a few wickets at the end could not distract from a superb batting recovery by 4 players who all scored their best ever score in Largo colours - Well done
Forfarshire started quite brightly and scored a few fours before Mina, James and Alex took 5 quick wickets to take the score from 23-0 to 35-5. More wickets for Will, Dom and Scott meant Forfarshire finished on 80-8 from their allotted overs. The ground fielding was good and the catching was superb again and once again we only bowled a handful of wides/no-balls. Again we improved on the last performance which is all we can ask of them.

Starthearn (A) Mon 9th June - Result : Won by 8 Wickets
On a sunny and breezy evening at a beautiful Doocot Park Largo fielded first and the Brown Brothers opened the bowling (The 1st team attack in 10 years ?) and Aidan was the first to strike when he trapped the Strathearn captain in front of his stumps. Ryan took a sharp catch off the bowling of Briony to remove the other opener. One Strathearn batsmen went on the offensive (Hitting a big 6) and he reached the retiral score with score on 36 for 2 in the 9th over. Some fantastic bowling then pegged Strathearn back with James bowling 2 overs for only 1 run and taking 2 wickets. Alex, Drew and Scott Fleming also bowled tightly as did Laurie who got his first wicket of the season. Ben also took a wicket in his first over.
We only bowled 6 wides and 2 no balls, gave away nothing in the field and took some super catches so this was easily our best bowling/fielding performance of the season so far.
James and Alex opened the innings and got off to a solid start before Alex was run out by a super bit of fielding when backing up too far. James and Matt then took the attack to the bowlers and it wasn't long before Matt had reached the retiral score with 5 lusty blows to the boundary. Drew was out shortly afterwards which brought Calum to the wicket. He and James took the score along to 60 before James reached the retiral score aswell (The first time he's done this). Ryan joined Calum and they polished off the last few runs to win in the 15th over. Strathearn kindly bolwed the last few overs to allow the other players a brief innnings
Overall this was a superb performance by a sharp unit and they all now know the bar has been set at this level and they will be looking to raise that bar even further over the next few weeks/months - Great stuff

Carlton (H) Fri 30th May - Result : Lost by 5 Wickets
Largo entertained Carlton from Edinburgh in the second round of the cup for the first time. Largo batted first and after the early setback of losing Ryan Alex and Mina pushed the score along nicely until Mina departed with the score on 38 in the 9th over. Calum and Laurie both scored a few quick runs before Matt Humphreys went on the offensive along with Alex. Matt top scored with 20 not out and Alex scored 15 before he unluckily dragged a widish delivery back onto his stumps. Drew also added a few at the end which took the score up to 96.
The running was very good between the wickets and even better if you take into account the superb ground fielding of Carlton who never gave any runs away.
In reply Carlton got off to a flyer with boundaries easy to come by with too many short deliveries being bowled. When the ball was pitched up the batsmen were in trouble with several edges not quite going to keeper or slip. Ryan kept it tight and was rewarded with the first wicket with the score on 33 at the end of the 6th over. The next wicket fell on 47 and it was a truly stunning catch that Laurie took off the bowling of Calum. Another decent stand took the score to 74 before Calum took his 2nd wicket. Alex then bowled beautifully and Ryan took a very good catch to leave Carlton on 77 for 4.
Carlton still had some work to do and edged their way to 94 before Ryan took another wicket. They reached the target of 97 with a couple of overs to go. The Largo fielding had been very good but too many 4 ball deliveries had been the difference between the sides.
Carlton were a real credit to cricket in the way they played and behaved and we look forward to meeting them again in the future and also wish them the best of luck in the next round

Dunfermline (A) Wed 14th May - Result : Won by 6 Wickets
Largo travelled to Dunfermline on a bright but cold evening. The toss was won by Alex and he asked Dunfermline to bat. Ryan and Briony kept it tight to start with before James came on to bowl. His first over brought him a hat-trick which as far as I'm aware was the first hat-trick by a Largo bowler at U13 level. Dom also took another wicket in the following over. This quick pile of wickets seemed to have a detrimental effect on the Largo team as they went to sleep in the field from then on and allowed the scoreboard to rotate way too quickly. Dunfermline finally reached 75 for 5 from their 20 overs with a very large percentage being extras.
In reply Largo always kept in touch of the run rate with Alex and James reaching 16 and 11 respectively before being retired. Mikey made 4 on his U13 debut but did not hit any of his legendaryu big hits which he is obviously saving until they are really needed ! Calum hit some quick runs before Mina finished off the match with 2 overs to spare.
In summary, with a few exceptions, the fielding and bowling was not up to the normal Largo standards so we will be looking for big improvements in the next few matches.

Freuchie (H) Tue 6th May - Result : Won by 19 Runs
Largo U13s continued their winning start to the 2008 campaign with a home match agaisnt Freuchie. Fine weather greeted the players and a recently cropped outfield made the ground look as fine as it has done so far this year. Largo won the toss and batted first. Alex and Jon Price got them off to a good start before Jon was bowled with the score on 25. Alex batted nicely before reaching the retiral score.
Laurie and debutant Calum batted nicely both making best scores for Largo U13s. Laurie was bowled by a peach of a ball which brought Ryan to the crease. He quickly reached the retiral score also which left Drew and Ben to finish off the innings taking the score to 106-5.
Freuchie batted nicely but got behind the required rate due to some superbly tight bowling by Ryan, Laurie and Ben who all bowled 2 overs conceding just a single run each. The 2 Freuchie openers both reached the retiral score but by now the gamne was way beyond them. They had a good blast at the end and raised their score to 87.
It was a really good match and lots of good cricket was played by both teams.

Falkland (A) Mon 28th April - Result : Won by 76 Runs
Largo U13s started their 2008 campaign with an away trip to Scroggie Park, Cupar. The heavy rain during the day threatened the match but Falkland were very kind and agreed to play with an intermediate ball, a slightly shorter pitch and the boundaries were brought in due to the wet outfield.
Largo batted first and all players acquited themselves very well in the difficult circumstances. All players scored runs with Alex top scoring before being retired. Largo players soon spotted that quick singles were the best way to score and ran very well between the wickets whilst a few bad balls were dispatched.
In reply Falkland struggled to get going and Largo took wickets at regular intervals with debutant Mina taking 3 wickets in her 2 overs and narrowly missed a hat-trick. Briony also took a wicket in her first over for Largo U13s and Robbie Allen kept very well on his debut.
