Arbroath Tournament - Moira Shaw - Sun 7th September - Result : 2nd Place

It was wet and wild when the guys started their final campaign of the season but they did not let the weather deter them as they rattled up a hefty 303 to defeat the Arbroath Flairs by a convincing margin. After a quick dry off they went out again and this time scored another big score of 291 to defeat Kinross by 64 runs. After another quick stop for lunch the weather finally dried up and again they scored over 300 when defeating a last minute team of players from Aberdeenshire and Arbroath.
This meant they qualified as Best Winners and played the Arbroath Smokies in the semi-final. An inspired spell by Ryan in his last ever U11 match meant they restricted them to 206. In reply all of the batsmen played well and were quickly ahead and they finally scored 253 to reach the final.
Arbroath Lichties batted very well but some fantastic fielding and catching restricted them to 260. In reply we lost a couple of wickets early on which put us just too far behind but some valiant batting towards the end meant we finished on 233. All of the players received medals and certificates for their tremendous efforts throughout the day.
Overall I thought the bowling and fielding were superb with hardly any wides being bowled and as far as I recollect all catches were taken. I witnesed lots of superb batting with tons of 4s and 6s (including the odd switch hit of course) and some sound defensive shots when needed aswell. Most of the players will be able to return next year and will be looking to go one step further no doubt.
Team - Andrew Eglinton (C), Matthew Baddeley, Nicholas Baddeley, Aidan Brown, Ryan Brown, Ben Coates, Graham Dodds, Hughes Gillin, William Naismith

Freuchie KC Tournament - Sun 31st August - Result : 1st and 4th out of 8 teams

An overcast morning greeted us at Freuchie for a 9:30am start. We had 2 teams and Team 2 started well by winning their first 2 games against Broomhall and one of the Freuchie teams. They then had a superb game gainst Arbroath and just got pipped but they played their best cricket of the morning in this match. In the final game they played Dunfermline in steady rain and the pitch became a tad sticky (mudbath) and they just got pipped again.
Team 1 had a slightly disappointing result in the first game when they tied with Freuchie but then improved each game by beating Kinross and then a strong Dunfermline team in a really dramatic last over which went each way until Largo prevailed and they were in the final against Arbroath. Some excellant batting gave them a decent total to defend and this was backed up by some superb bowling and fielding and they won the final by 20 runs. As an additional bonus Callum Robertson was named player of the tournament.
Team 1 - Matthew Baddeley, Nicholas Baddeley, Kieran Barker, Nathan Fordyce-Wright, Callum Robertson, Callum Moodie, Aidan Bochers, Todd Robertson
Team 2 - William Naismith, Scott Robertson, Joshua Cumming, Aidan Brown, Graham Dodds, Blair Wilson, Connor Wright, Callum Barker

Broomhall KC Tournament - Sun 17th August - Result : 2nd Place - Won 4 out of 5 games

A fine day greeted us at Broomhall and even though there had been steady rain for several days prior to the day Stuart and his team had managed to get 3 pitches setup. The campaign started against Freuchie and the boys soon got into their stride. Scott Robertson played some superb shots which helped see Largo achieve their first win of the day
A tougher match came against Dunfermline but they upped their games and again achieved a good win with a solid performance. By now Nicholas was into his stride and was bowling nicely along with his more experieced brother.
Broomhall were the next team they faced and the boys showed their professionalism and no lack of skill with lots of fours and quite a few sixes.
The next mnatch was against a very strong Arbroath team and Largo batted first. They instinctivey realised they had to up their games and that is exactly what they did. They bowled and fielded amazingly well and head coach Mr Barker was immensely proud of their efforts in restricting Arbroath to 249. In reply they batted very sensibly and only lost 2 wickets and scored 230 which was a great score against a well drilled Arbroath team. William also captained the team really well.
Finally they played Kinross and by now were full of themsleves and a couple of them decided they were KP and had a go at switch hits which came off very well. (Should they bat the other way round all of the time ?)
All in all a really good day which they all enjoyed and helped them grow as match players
Team - Matthew Baddeley, Nicholas Baddeley, Kieran Barker, Aidan Brown, Nathan Fordyce-Wright, William Naismith, Calum Robertson, Scott Robertson

Arbroath Tournament - MacDonalds - Sun 10th August - Result : 5th Place

On Sunday Largo's U11 team took part in the McDonald Trophy at Arbroath. Twelve teams split into three groups and Largo were paired with Dunfermline, Arbroath Smokies (B) and Forfarshire.
First up for our intrepid band were Arbroath Smokies. Captain Eglinton won the toss and choose to bowl. Largo were impressive in the field with good bowling from all and well backed up by some first class fielding. This restricted Arbroath to 248 from their 8 overs in reply Largo made 265 winning by 17 runs. The winning margin would have been bigger but for 4 silly run outs.
Next up was Forfarshire, this was a tougher match all round with some great bowling from Forfarshire restricting Largo to 248 from their 8 overs. Forfarshire in reply made 258 with two dropped catches proving costly but still a good team effort.
After lunch Largo played Dunfermline and when Largo lost the toss they were asked to field. Some good bowling and great fielding saw Dunfermline make 249 from their 8 overs. In reply some explosive hitting from Ben and good contributions from Callum and Matthew saw Largo make 261. 2 wins was not quite good enough to get them to the semi finals unfortunately falling just 5 runs short.
In their final game as 2nd best runner up Largo played Aberdeenshire. By far this was the teams best performance with some truly outstanding fielding which would have put many of their elders to shame. Five run-outs saw Aberdeenshire make 198 and in reply Largo made 239, so they finished 5th overall.
It would be unfair to pick out any one individual as all players contributed, it was a great team effort which made the Largo Barmy Army and their coach very proud. Arbroath organised a first class competition which even a mid afternoon cloud burst could not spoil.
Team - Andrew Eglinton (C), Callum Barker, Ben Coates, Kyle Ritchie, Graham Dodds, Hughes Gillin, Todd Robertson, Matthew Baddeley

Largo KC Tournament - Sun 3rd August - Result : Team 1 won all 4 games, Team 2 won 3 out of 4 games

St Andrews Station park made it's debut as a host for Largo CC and 8 teams took part. Largo (1 and 2), Freuchie, Kinross (1 and 2). Arbroath, Strathearn and Strathmore all took part in a fun morning with all teams playing 4 matches. The wickets and pitches all played really well and the support for the kids was fantastic.
Largo Team 1 won all of their matches and Largo Team 2 won 3 out of their 4 games.

Kinross Tournament - Sat 28th June - Result : Both teams Won all 4 games

All roads led to Kinross House on a SATURDAY morning for a Kwikcricket Festival on the lawn in front of the big house.
Largo managed to pull together around 20 youngsters for the trip, giving 2 full teams and spares for those that were short! The Festival was very much an event where participation was more important than the results. Largo entered the spirit of the Festival by rotating team members, ensuring all played as much as possible. For many Largonauts (some as young as 7), this was their first stab at a game against another team and the experience will stand them in good stead in the years ahead. The weather ensured a slippery surface, with the occasional heavier shower, however, the Largonauts were not for coming off and ended the morning with 8 wins out of 8 against teams from Kinross, Freuchie, Broomhall and Glenrothes.

Forfarshire (H) - Thu 26th June - Result : Won by 54 runs

No dramas this week with all keys in place and the pitch ready and prepared for the arrival of our visitors. Andrew lost the toss and we were asked to bat first. Kyle and Todd got off to a steady start and reached 217 after 4 overs. Andrew and Graham then really pushed ahead with an excellent stand including 5 fours and after 8 overs the score had raced along to 253. Will and Aidan played well and got the score up to 275 with a run-out of Aidan being the only blot on the copybook. Aidan also played the Switch shot on a couple of occasions (he has been practising it) and picked up runs both times ! Robert and Daniel then kept the scoreboard ticking over and the final score of 294 was reached. With only 2 wickets being lost this was a top class batting display.
Todd opened the bowling and what an over it was. All balls swung prodigously and he took a wicket with his 4th ball. This put Forfarshire on the back foot. More good bowling meant they only reached 213 after 4 overs and were now behind the required rate. Some more incredibly tight bowling and fielding meant that after 8 overs they had only reached 223 and 295 now seemed a long way off. When Aidan took a wicket in the next over the match was all but over but Forfarshire batted on and kept eating away at the total until Kyle took 2 wickets in 2 balls to leave them on 226 after 12 overs. They batted nicely at the end and got up to 240
All apsects of the boys cricket were very good and in particular the noise and encouragement in the field. Some great captaincy by Andrew also helped the team. Only a few singles were missed whilst batting and the bowling was of a very high quality with only 10 wides being bowled. The fielding was also superb with some super backing up and hardly any wild throws and not a single overthrow this week. A good standard has now been set so lets improve on that again in the next match.
Team - Andrew Eglinton (C), Todd Robertson, Will Tooze, Kyle Ritchie, Graham Dodds, Aidan Brown, Robert Spencer, Daniel Wheyway

Kinross (H) - Thu 19th June - Result : Lost by 16 runs

A very breezy evening saw Kinross arrive for a 6pm start ....... Drama unfolded as the pavillion key was found to have been locked inside - with 6.30 fast approaching Gillin (Snr.) saved the day with a borrowed hacksaw! On a grass wicket on the East edge of the square, Kinross won the toss and sent Largo in to bat. A spritely opening partnership between Will and Kyle saw 25 off the first 4 overs. Hughes and Matthew were held in check by some tight bowling and this set the tone for the rest of the innings as William and Callum, followed by Ben and Todd found runs hard to come by. With 4 wickets falling in all, Largo ended on 266. Coach Tooze assembled the troops and commended them on their play against tight and relatively quick bowling, whilst suggesting that a more positive approach with our running would have yielded at least 10 more runs.
The Kinross innings got off to a quick start, with the first pair putting on 28, including 2 overthrows for 4! Todd took 2 wickets in the next over, but Kinross were scoring freely, with their hit and run philosophy bearing fruit. Another 4 overthrows saw the halfway score at 244.
The next Kinross pair were very strong and the Largo total was reached in the 11th over. However, the Largo bowlers stuck to their task and 2 wickets for Matthew, together with tight fielding saw Kinross finish on 282, a winning margin of only 16 runs.
All in all a close affair, with Largo bowling only 9 wides, having taken 4 wickets. The difference was the 10 runs passed up whilst batting, together with the 3 overthrown fours! The performance was generally good and could have very easily resulted in victory, but with lots to work on, there is much more to come from this young team.
Team - Ben Coates (C), Todd Robertson, Will Tooze, Kyle Ritchie, Hughes Gillin, Matthew Baddeley, Callum Barker, William Naismith

Falkland (A) - Fri 13th June - Result : Won by 5 runs

Tonight saw Largo U11 take on Falkland. Captain Hughes won the toss and chose to field . Last minute illness to Graham saw Kieran Barker make his first start for Largo U 11. A good opening spell from Todd and Kyle kept the runs down. The team performed well with wickets for Ben and Hughes and all of the team fielded well but Falkland still managed to set Largo a pretty formidable 182 to win from 20 overs.
Ben and Daniel opened the innings for Largo and both were out once. The next pair were the Barker brothers batting together for the first time for Largo. Callum hit some good shots with one great four while Kieran, although nervous, played well playing two or three good shots and neither brother was out. The brothers were followed by Matthew (filling in for William who was also ill) and Todd and these two played beautifully scoring boundaries and running well and again neither of them were out.
The last pair of Hughes and Kyle were each out once but played well to ensure that Largo went into the last over 4 in front. Young Ritchie played an innings his dad (Viv) would be proud of shutting out some great bowling and even surviving a close run-out; to see Largo home by 5 runs. Falkland were good in the field causing some panic among Largo's batsmen.
The game was played in a great spirit by both teams and Largo's Barmy Army had a good evenings cricket to watch.
The team was well led by Hughes and all players performed well but special mention goes to Kieran who at the last minute filled in and let nobody down.
Team - Callum Barker, Daniel Wheyway, Matthew Baddley, Ben Coates, Hughes Gillin(capt), Kieran Barker, Todd Robertson, Kyle (the wall) Ritchie

Freuchie (H) - Thu 5th June - Result : Won by 60 runs

A balmy evening greeted Freuchie to East Drive for the latest U11 match. Captain Hughes won the toss and elected to bat, sending in the Strathkinness duo of Matthew and William. These 2 saw off the large Freuchie opening bowlers with some sound defensive play and they had amassed 17 runs by the end of their 4 over spell. Next pair were Todd and Graham. They played well against some tight bowling, timing the ball well and scoring 3 x 4s, taking the total to 246 at the halfway stage. Ben and Daniel continued the good work, the only hiccup being a run out from a direct hit - 266 after 12 overs. The final pair of Hughes and Kyle ran like duracell bunnies, with every ball putting pressure on the fielders. With a couple of lusty 4s from Kyle thrown in, the final total was 304 - a formidable achievement.
As the largo chill descended and warm tea allowed the scorer to continue, Kyle and Todd opened the bowling and were rewarded with a wicket in each of their first overs. Hughes took 2 wickets and with Daniel bowling a tight line, Freuchie were on 224 at halfway. Ben and Matthew continued to apply the pressure, resulting in run outs from 2 consecutive balls. Graham started the final spell with a maiden and William took a wicket with the final ball, leaving Freuchie on 244.
A superb all round performance, with all instructions followed and great team spirit in abundance - roll on the next game.
Team - Hughes Gillin, Kyle Ritchie, Daniel Wheway, Ben Coates, Graham Dodds, Todd Robertson, William Naismith, Matthew Baddeley

Dunfermline (H) - Thu 29th May - Result : Lost by 2 runs

The first warm and sunny evening of the season saw the visit of Dunfermline to East Drive . Batting first, Largo opened with a mixture of experience (Will) and Graham making his hard ball debut for Largo . Against some good bowling Largo made steady progress with Will hitting a couple of boundaries and Graham striking the ball well and unfortunate to be out to some outstanding fielding from the visitors. There was enough in his debut innings to show that Graham is definitely one for the future. Next pair Todd and Ben pushed the score on against more wayward bowling, both also hitting boundaries to add to a number of extras. A clever bowling change made it difficult for William and Hughes to maintain the momentum, but Hughes played some classical defensive strokes and William showed good tenacity. The final overs saw Kyle and Robert put on a good partnership with a captains innings from Ritchie with two boundaries and a “5” courtesy of overthrows. The Largo innings finished on 70.
The Dunfermline reply started briskly with several boundaries. It was only in the sixth over when Ben took two wickets that the game became a contest again. Three quick boundaries from Largo player Matthew Baddeley (an honorary Dunfermline player for the evening) swung the game in favour of the visitors and left Dunfermline needing 10 runs for victory from the remaining four overs. Tight bowling from Will and Kyle set up a grandstand finish, a wicket from Kyle in the final over left the visitors needing 3 to win off the last ball; a fine shot through midwicket raced to the boundary despite the despairing efforts of the Largo field.
More good experience for the Largo youngsters, better running between wickets could have secured another 10-15 runs. Dunfermline took 7 wickets, Largo 3. This made all the difference.
Thanks and congratulations go to Dunfermline for contributing to such an exciting game.
Team - Ben Coates, Graham Dodds, Hughes Gillin, William Naismith, Kyle Ritchie (C), Todd Robertson, Robert Spencer & Will Tooze

Dunfermline Tournament - Sun 25th May - Result : Won all 3 games

On Sunday Largo's intrepid band of Kwik Cricketers played their first games of the season at Dunfermline. Also taking part were Dunfermline, Kinross and Broomhall.
Largo's first game was against Broomhall and Captain Coates lost the toss and was asked to bowl first. In their 8 overs Largo bowled only 1 wide and gave away no other extras whilst taking three wickets. Some superb bowling and fielding restricted Broomhall to 210. In reply Largo lost 3 wickets but some top batting saw them reach 239 in their 8 overs.
Next up was Kinross, Captain Coates again lost the toss and Largo were asked to bowl first. Largo again bowled and fielded very well restricting Kinross to 216 for the loss of 3 wickets. In reply some outstanding batting saw Largo reach 240 losing only 3 wickets.
With two played and two won next up for our merry men were the hosts Dunfermline. Captain Coates at last won a toss and chose to bat. They amassed 240 in their 8 overs losing only 1 wicket. Some top class bowling restricted their hosts to 220 whilst taking 4 wickets.
The boys were a real pleasure to be with showing real maturity and some great skills. It would be unfair to single anyone out as they were all fantastic. Everyone enjoyed themselves and I am sure benefited greatly from a weel run day. I certainly did they and they were a real joy to be with.
Team - Ben Coates, Matthew Baddely, Kieran Barker, Joshua Cumming, Graham Dodds, William Naismith, Callum Robertson, Scott Robertson.

Forfarshire (A) - Wed 19th May - Result : Lost by X Runs

Tonight saw Largo U11 play a good match against Forfarshire at Forthill Sports Club. Largo lost the toss and were put in by Forfarshire. The team all batted well losing only 1 wicket in their 16 overs with some good shots from Hughes, Todd, Callum, Briony and Matthew.
All players ran well between the wickets with good loud calling. Largo set a total of 178 from their 16 overs.
Forfarshire's reply was kept in check by some excellent bowling from Matthew, Todd and Briony who took a wicket in her second over. Some excellent batting from Forfarshire saw them punish some wayward bowling, poor ground fielding did not help. Largo did encourage each other and the team spirit was good, there were some good stops from Daniel, Todd and Hughes and Ben did a good job behind the timbers.
The game was played in the right spirit and Forfarshire were good hosts.
Nice ground good wicket but damn cold. I am sure it would have been warmer in the wastes of Siberia !
A good team effort and valuable experience
Team - Briony Gillin (capt), Hughes Gillin, Callum Barker, Ben Coates, Todd Robertson, Daniel Wheyway, William Naismith, Matthew Baddley

Kinross (A) - Wed 14th May - Result : Lost by 30 Runs

Largo U 11’s suffered their first defeat of the season to an excellent Kinross team. Put in to bat by the home team Largo found runs difficult to come by. Despite generally solid performances and useful runs from new boys William and Matthew, only Daniel with three boundaries took the attack to Kinross. A couple of late wickets in the chase for runs saw the Largo innings close on 47.
This always looked a difficult total to defend, but Largo made a great start with Kyle bowling a maiden over to start the innings. Outstanding efforts in the field from Kyle, Robert, Callum (behind the stumps) and particularly brave stops from Hamish could not prevent the second batting pair putting Kinross in a strong position. A great spell on his debut by Matthew saw the first wicket of the night and he could easily have had two more. Unfortunately the only other wicket was claimed by Will, too late to save the game; the Kinross innings closed on 77.
Despite losing the boys enjoyed the opportunity to play on a grass wicket in such grand surroundings. They learned more about the game – the importance of taking wickets and every available run. In addition to good individual performances it was great to hear them encouraging their team mates in the field up to the very last ball. Thanks to our hosts Kinross for the way the game was played and the much appreciated refreshments between innings.
Team - Matthew Baddeley, Callum Barker, William Naismith, Kyle Ritchie, Robert Spencer, Hamish Stirling, Will Tooze (C) and Daniel Wheway,

Falkland (H) - Thu 8th May - Result : Won by 39 Runs

Largo U-11’s got off to a winning start to their season against Falkland at East Drive on a bright but cold evening. The modified format saw each pair batting for 4 overs, with five runs deducted for each wicket falling. The visitors batted first; tight bowling from Kyle and Hughes restricted the Falkland opening pair to 17 runs. Ben and Robert continued the good work conceding a miserly 14 runs including a wicket for Ben. The next overs saw Todd take an excellent wicket and Daniel bravely recover from a caught and bowled attempt that left him shedding blood for Largo from a split finger. Will and Callum finished of the Falkland innings with three wickets each which restricted the visitors to 44.
In reply Largo batted sensibly and didn’t lose a single wicket – a factor that made the difference. Opening pair Robert and Kyle took the score onto 20, including a first boundary for Robert. Next in Ben and Todd punished the bowling with Ben hitting three boundaries and Todd one. Callum and Daniel continued the responsible batting seeing the score through to 62. Captain Tooze and Hughes made sure that no wickets fell and saw Largo through to a closing score of 83.
Overall it was a pleasingly mature and professional display from Largo’s youngest hard ball cricketers. The game was played in good spirit; thanks go to Falkland for contributing to an enjoyable evening.
Team - Callum Barker, Hughes Gillin, Kyle Ritchie, Todd Robertson, , Robert Spencer, Will Tooze (C) and Daniel Wheway
